The White Knights, a peacekeeping force in the Planetary System, have a mission: to stop the evil Norsa Empire from dominating the world. The Norsa base on planet X must be destroyed: an agent named JJ is sent to infiltrate it and recover the five diskettes that will allow him to enter the self-destruct sequence into the base's central computer. However, in addition to fulfilling this main objective, JJ must also find a way to save his friends, Apple and Champ.
Based on the anime of the same name, Zillion is a platformer with an emphasis on exploration and problem-solving rather than fast-paced "jump and run" gameplay. The game takes place almost entirely in the underground base. Capsules containing key codes and bonuses are scattered throughout the vast environments. Common obstacles include enemy guards, tripwires, laser turrets, and force fields. Rooms must be unlocked using computer ID cards and entering the correct four-digit code. Specific actions such as disabling barriers, disabling traps, etc., are sometimes also required.
