X-Men is a side-scrolling beat 'em up/platformer, much like its namesake counterpart Mega Drive/Genesis. Several X-Men characters are playable throughout the game. The player can choose from two characters from the start, Cyclops and Wolverine, and three Levels can be accessed. During the game, the player can unlock five more X-Men namely Storm, Iceman, Rogue, Nightcrawler and Psylocke.
The story is that most of the X-Men were kidnapped by Magneto, which is why only Cyclops and Wolverine are available from the start. Apparently, unlocking the characters is equivalent to saving it. Along the way, there are several enemies from the X-Men universe to defeat, and in the end, Magneto needs a rebuke again.
The basic mechanics of the game are punches, (double) jumps and jump kicks. Additionally, pressing Start enables/disables characters' mutant ability, such as Wolverine's claws or Cyclops' laser beams. Using it, however, consumes a limited amount of energy, which can be refreshed by finding "X" symbols.
