The introductory video on the progress of racing vehicles in the story ends by showing the unforeseen capabilities of the new antigravity floating cars, or rather ships, which move without touching the ground, therefore without friction and able to perform and achieve otherwise impossible movements and speeds. The year is 2048. Antigravity races run by pilots driving racers that hover above the ground make their debut in New York. WipeOut 2048 is a futuristic racing game, part of the PS Vita launcher, whose time frame places it at the start of the WipeOut timeline.

Success is achieved by both eliminating rival pilots and leading them towards the objective, with gameplay mostly consisting of high-speed racing (displayed at 30fps, although the PS3 installment of the previous series has some graphics running at 60 fps) and use weapons against other racers. The tracks are wider, having been planned to simplify a game behavior focused on attacking opponents. When racers are floating, the lack of friction with the ground makes their physical behavior different from racing vehicles touching the ground, especially increasing steering sensitivity, which emphasizes gameplay complexity.
