Warrior of Rome is a strategy game set in ancient Rome. It is displayed from top to bottom and all units are represented by icons on the square fields of the game map. The basic gameplay is simple: on each of the four levels there are objectives to complete, e.g. . destroy pirate ships. To do this, the player chooses a unit and orders it to move somewhere. When hostile units encounter each other, they automatically fight; battles are displayed in separate windows.

Besides movement, there are also other orders to be given to each individual unit, e.g. building a palisade, crafting a trap, movement speed, and most importantly, retreat options. Then a unit automatically flees when a fight doesn't work, and after a rest it regenerates to full strength.
