Viva Piñata is a simulation in the vein of a game like Harvest Moon. Although there is no specific story or objective in the game, you can progress by attracting many types of Piñatas to your garden. At first, you will only have a small patch of land covered in bric-a-brac; however, with a little basic cleaning and maintenance, you can start attracting many different species, starting with the tiny Whirlm, all the way up to larger creatures like Horstachio.

If you're more interested in earning money than collecting, you can ask Piñatas to produce goods, like honey or milk, for you. Failing that, you can just sell one of your excess Piñatas after learning how to make them mate. Each species has its own mating ritual and conditions. Occasionally, mischievous sour piñatas will show up to cause trouble in your yard. If you can cure them of their sour state, they will help your garden instead! You can also get services from local Piñata Island residents, such as shopping, garden maintenance, and Piñata catching (if you need a particular species).
