Small Brawl goes in a different direction than other Twisted Metal games, with all of their characters portrayed as kids at school being bullied by Calypso, who wants them to enter her contest and win an ultimate prize. Calypso's school kids (like Thumper, Auger, and Sweet Tooth) enter Calypso's contest so they can stop her bullying and win her prize.
All characters build realistic remote control cars ranging from an ice cream truck to a hearse so they can battle with weapons ranging from chewing gum to firecrackers, toothpicks to flaming barbie heads so they can win.
The physics engine comes from Twisted Metal 2 Small Brawl's battlegrounds, including treehouses, putt-putt courses, and bowling allies. These don't have any hidden areas, but there are plenty of unlocks. Tournament (defeat 8 enemies and 2 bosses), Endurance (survive the carnage for as long as you can) and Challenge (face/eliminate a specific rival) modes are included, along with Co-Op and Head-to-Head multiplayer modes .
