Every year, a mysterious man named Calypso sends e-mails to famous pilots, inviting them to participate in a tournament called Twisted Metal. Tournament conditions are anything but ordinary: opponents battle it out in armored vehicles with mounted weapons. The winner receives an audience with Calypso and is granted a single wish - a wish without limits, whether it be money, power, or even our reality itself. In 2005, the annual tournament was held again in Los Angeles, and twelve pilots, each with their own agenda, came to compete against each other to the death.
Twisted Metal is a vehicular combat game. The player selects one of the twelve available drivers and participates in the competition. In the single-player story mode, the player must progress through six combat stages; all opponents must be destroyed to win the race. In the two-player co-op mode, players choose a battlefield and control two cars in an attempt to outrun the competition.
All vehicles are equipped with two mounted machine guns; although relatively weak, they have unlimited ammo. Other weapons can be picked up by running over them during races. These include homing and fire missiles, landmines, tire studs and others. Each participant has a life bar, which can be replenished by entering a specific area of the stage.
