Tony Hawk: Ride is a spin-off from the Tony Hawk skateboarding series. The game comes with a wireless device in the shape of a real skateboard, which is required to play the game. Players stand on the board, then infrared sensors detect movement to control the character in the game. Rather than simply turn, the game detects tilt for steering force, tail or nose lift (for manuals and ollies) and ducks to mimic a grip which is registered by separate sensors at the front and on the sides by blocking them with one hand. The thrust is done by flicking one leg along the ground next to the board to gain speed. More complex tricks are performed by leaning and turning the board. There are three difficulty levels to play the game. At the lowest level, steering is done automatically and the player only has to perform jumps and tricks. For higher levels, steering is disabled, along with aids such as guide lines.
