Tombs & Treasure is an improved version of the previous computer version of Taiyō no Shinden: Asteka II.
The story in this version is more detailed than in the original version. Professor Imes was a famous archaeologist particularly interested in the ancient Maya civilization. Having heard of a powerful artifact known as Sun Key, which is apparently capable of unlocking the secrets of the Mayans, the Professor assembled a team and traveled to the ruins of Chichen Itza. However, he and his team mysteriously disappeared; only his guide José was able to escape, breaking the news to the professor's daughter.
Unlike the original version, the player character travels to Yucatan with Professor Imes' daughter and guide Jose. Both have special abilities that are sometimes needed to solve puzzles: the young woman is good at music, and José is able to move heavy objects. Due to these changes, some locations and puzzles have been changed in this version.
Another significant gameplay change is the introduction of role-playing elements. Solving puzzles and defeating demons in turn-based combat grants experience points to the protagonist. Even though combat is very rare in the game, facing more powerful enemies can be futile if the player has not accumulated enough experience by completing other tasks beforehand.
