In the year 2401, Space Marine Sergeant Cortez leaves the space station he visited at the end of his previous journey. He soon discovers that the crystals he found can power a time machine. After locating traces of TimeSplitter activity at various time periods on Earth, Cortez boards the time machine and travels to those time periods, hoping to aid various characters in their battles against the evil.
TimeSplitters: Future Perfect is a first-person shooter in which players fight their way through thirteen story missions spread over six time periods, alone or in co-op. The protagonist's arsenal varies depending on the time period he travels to: for example, traveling to 1924 will allow Cortez to wield weapons from World War I; a Soviet frame in the 1960s contains various local firearms of that period; stages that take place in the future have corresponding futuristic weapons, etc. In addition to rapid-fire gameplay, there are also stealth and vehicle driving segments.
As in previous episodes of the series, various multiplayer modes are included. Players can battle computer-controlled opponents on one of fifteen arcade maps, or create their own. Players can also compete for rewards in dozens of arcade league matches and challenges. It is possible to choose from 150 characters and challenge other players in a one-on-one battle, either with split screen up to four players or online and LAN.
