House of the Dead is a rail shooter. Travel through four chapters with branching paths and kill all the zombies, avoid killing the humans, and save the girl. Shooting various special targets along the way or during a certain period of time grants the player temporary health and weapon boosts.
The Saturn version of the game contains two additional modes called Saturn Mode and Boss Mode. Saturn Mode plays like the arcade game, but offers the player different characters to choose from. Character selection is important as they each have different attributes such as their cooldown time and the amount of damage they can take before dying. Boss Mode allows the player to fight a boss of their choice or all four boss monsters in the game consecutively.
