The Golf Club is a simulation of the sports game of golf. It is developed by HB Studios who are known for their work on various EA Sports titles, but this title is self-published and unlicensed (players, course, hardware) except for associated Greg Norman's name and picture to the custom course designer portion.
The game can be played in rounds, tours or tournaments. It is not possible to create custom golfers, but the outfit colors of existing golfers can be changed with a swing left or right. The game is played in third person view. Unlike similar games, it doesn't use a timer or bar to determine the power or curve of the shot. Instead, the player chooses a club and stroke type, then has the power defined by the swing performed with a controller or mouse. While reading, the wind direction, elevation and distance to pin are displayed.
Apart from the courses included by default, it has an editor to design custom courses and share them globally. Players can browse available courses through various filters and certain courses are highlighted. Although no real courses are allowed, many have been remade into the game by users. The configuration of a new course is defined through a number of parameters such as length, terrain type and foliage density with sliders, then it is generated automatically. The course can then be modified further by adding obstacles, trees, water, animals and holes, modifying the greens or widening the fairways. However, existing courses from other users cannot be edited. There are different themes for the lessons, such as alpine, desert, rural, forest, etc.
The game can be played offline with ghost opponents, up to four players locally (PC version) or online against friends. Multiplayer game modes include stroke play, match play, and fourball where all player balls are displayed on the course for each stroke. Each game is recorded online, so it is possible to compete against players' performance in the past with the option of friend rounds, record rounds or rival rounds. The latter are tricks by players close to your own abilities. Ghost balls and scores can optionally be hidden. Other players from all over the world can also be followed live. The game keeps detailed statistics of each course and player, as well as rankings.
