Tales of the Unknown, better known by its subtitle The Bard's Tale, is a dungeon crawler video game designed and programmed by Michael Cranford, published by Interplay Productions in 1985 and distributed by Electronic Arts1
Originally released on Apple II, it has also been ported to Commodore 64, Apple IIgs, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Amiga, Atari ST, MS-DOS, Macintosh and Nintendo Entertainment System. In 2018, a Bard's Tale Trilogy: Remastered Edition version was released.
The game was notable among other role-playing video games of the time for its unprecedented 3D-like graphics and partially animated character portraits. The concept of the bard was also an innovation: The bard was author Michael Cranford's contribution to the genre, a character who casts spells by singing one of six melodies2
It is one of the first video games inspired by the Dungeons and Dragons role-playing game.
