Heihachi Mishima, the leader of the mighty Mishima Zaibatsu, was dethroned and defeated by his son Kazuya, supported and possessed by the Devil himself. Under his leadership, the organization has become even more corrupt and is involved in illegal animal experimentation. An animal rights activist named Jun Kazama is sent to confront Kazuya. Meanwhile, Heihachi plots to overthrow his son. In an attempt to get his father out, Kazuya holds the second King of the Iron Fist tournament.
The follow-up to Tekken is a versus fighting game with similar mechanics, with four buttons assigned to left and right punches and kicks. New moves include back throws, chain throws, and a side step unique to Kazuya and Heihachi Mishima. Locks now deal damage based on distance.
The game also introduces three new game modes: Survival Mode, Team Battle, and Time Trial. Survival mode is an endless series of matches, keeping track of how many opponents the player has defeated and not restoring the controllable character to full health after each battle. Team Battle is a two-player mode with up to eight selectable characters. Time Attack offers the possibility of setting records in timed combat.
