A year after the falling block puzzle game Puyo Puyo was released for MSX and Famicom, an arcade version was released which took the basic concept but transformed it from a single-player into a competitive game, fundamentally changing the serial: All ports and subsequent serial entries are based on this version.
The original arcade version features two modes: a single-player story mode and a two-player competitive mode. In story mode (which is based on characters from Compile's Madō Monogatari RPG series), the player controls Arle Nadja (Silvana in the English translation of the arcade version), a young witch, whose goal is to defeat Satan. To do this, she must win 12 battles against her minions until she can meet him in a final showdown. The game offers an additional practice mode against three lesser opponents, as well as the ability to start from level 4 of the main game.
