Star Fox Zero is a 3D vehicular shooter from the long running Star Fox series. Fox McCloud's father and two Wingmans were sent five years ago to investigate the activities of mad scientist Andros on the remote planet Venom. Unaware that one of his wingmen Pigma Dengar was working for Andros, he was lured into a trap and never heard from again but was able to help his other wingman Peppy Hare escape. He reported that Andros had gathered an army and was determined to conquer the Lylat star system. Now, five years later, the opposing sides are waging a full-scale war over the system. Fox McCloud brought his father's squadron out of retirement and assembled a new team including Falco Lombardi, Slippy Toad and his father's former winger Peppy Hare.
In the game, various vehicles can be controlled like: the Arwing fighter jet which can land and transform into a walker; the Landmaster-like tank which has a short-duration hover function and can transform into a Gravmaster which allows it to function as a slow-moving, heavily-armed fighter; the Gyrowing is a helicopter-like vehicle with the appearance of a drone that can deploy a Direct-I robot capable of collecting objects and hacking into computer systems.
The game has two modes: story mode and a training mode to learn how to control your machine. In the story mode, you undertake missions with different objectives. In missions, upgrades for your laser weapon can be collected, as well as additional smart bombs and shield restore bonuses. While flying or driving, various enemies and bosses must be destroyed. Controls of your vehicle can be shared between two players by selecting cooperative play on the mission selection screen.
