Trouble awaits Peter Parker in Spider-Man's first Game Boy Color appearance: An explosion in Dr. Curt Conners' lab leads him into a plot planned by a mysterious villain, involving the alien symbiote and several of Spidey's archenemies. .
The game is a platform game, divided into several large levels. The progression is not strictly linear: some levels can be freely explored in any order before continuing the story. Locations include City, Subway and Sewers, Docks, and a Warehouse. Levels are usually crawling with enemies that Spider-Man can kick and punch. Defeating them will eventually cause him to level up, get stronger, and learn new combat moves.
Spidey's special abilities come into play as he swings freely across rooftops, clings to walls, or throws web balls at enemies to immobilize them. His spider-sense usually alerts him when important places or special obstacles are nearby.
The game includes various boss fights with Venom, the Lizard, and the Hobgoblin.
