Soul Nomad & the World Eaters is a strategy/RPG hybrid and takes place in Prodesta, a place where war has ravaged the land for thousands of years. The story centers on Gig, the Master of Death, an evil god, who once attempted to destroy the world with beings he controlled called the World Eaters. Gig was eventually defeated by the forces of good and trapped inside an obsidian blade, which was then hidden in a small village.
The player plays a young boy or girl, who lives in this small village, and adulthood receives this sword, freeing Gig to possess the player's body. However, the protagonist's will is strong and Gig cannot control him completely.
Squads of units can be stored and managed in "rooms", pocket dimensions accessible at all times. These rooms can be outfitted with decorations to give the contained team certain buffs and the rooms can be upgraded to give stat bonuses to the main character. Additionally, units can be organized into different formations. Each team also has a leader, which is extremely important, because if the leader is defeated, the whole team is lost.
The combat system features attackers and defenders on either side of the screen, each side taking its turn in battle, but squads attack in groups rather than individually.
