As Snoopy sleeps atop his doghouse, the player is transported into his dreams about the adventures of his alter ego, the "World Famous WWI Flying Ace." The rest of the Peanuts characters are woven into his dream—and thus into the game's narrative—as they pass by the sleeping beagle. Lucy Van Pelt becomes the commander of the Allied forces, Linus and Sally take humorous turns as intelligence officers, while poor Charlie Brown is typically cast as a janitor at an Allied airbase. The story unfolds quickly after Charlie Brown is captured by the Red Baron's henchmen, along with the plans for a secret weapon that could change the course of the war. Snoopy and his co-pilot, Woodstock, take to the skies in his trusty Sopwith Camel to retrieve the plans and rescue Snoopy's proud owner.
The game's mechanics focus on third-person action-adventure flight in settings such as air races, dogfight missions, and world exploration. Collectibles around the world unlock aircraft and weapon upgrades, as well as new character/aircraft combinations for use in multiplayer dogfights. Hardcore Peanuts fans will recognize the Verdun front lines, the Montsec Woods, and the Verdon Gorge as settings from the original Snoopy Flying Ace adventures in Charles M. Schulz's comic strip. The game features seven of these locations, which often vary considerably from mission to mission.
