A group of high school students decide to play a ritual game called "Persona". Unexpectedly, they are knocked unconscious and have a vision of a mysterious being called Philemon, which grants them the ability to summon powerful creatures known as Personae. Afterwards, the students go to visit their sick friend, Mary. Once they come out of the girl's room in the hospital, they see that their hometown has changed. They cannot leave it and it is infested with demons. At first, it would seem that the giant Sebec and its leader are responsible for the terrible accident. But this corporation isn't the only enemy the young heroes must face - they must look deep into their hearts, and perhaps find the truth there...
Persona is the start of a sub-series within the Megami Tensei universe, and one of the first Megaten titles to be released in the West. While the game's overworld locations and combat screens are isometric, the maze-like 3D dungeons are explored from a first-person perspective. Player-controlled characters battle randomly encountered demons in turn-based combat, using melee weapons, guns, or spells. Unlike most other Megaten games, the player-controlled party (up to five active fighters) is made up entirely of human characters. Verbal communication with demons, however, still plays an important role in the game.
Each character has a unique set of four communication styles, e.g. insult, flattery, etc. The player can select combinations of different characters and their approaches when talking with the demon. Depending on the player's choices, as well as the current moon phase, the demon may end up responding in one of four emotional ways: anger, fear, joy, and interest. The last two types of responses are beneficial for the player: the demon can give the group a useful object or a spell card.
If the player combines different types of spell cards, more powerful creatures (Personae) can be merged into a special slot called Velvet Room. Personae act like gear sets and can be attached to player characters, changing their settings, strengths and weaknesses, and teaching them new spells.
