Rock of the Dead uses the existing Guitar Hero and Rock Band guitars and drums in an on-rails experience, essentially combining Guitar Hero with Typing of the Dead. It stars Neil Patrick Harris and Felicia Day and includes several songs by Rob Zombie and White Zombie, as well as Rob Zombie himself.

Like most on-rails games, it uses the familiar first-person perspective and guides the player through environments. There are two main ways to deal with enemies. The majority of enemies use time signatures. There is a time signature associated with each enemy. Depending on the difficulty level, these time signatures can range from a single note to a series of complex chords. Players play the corresponding sequence of notes as quickly as possible to defeat the enemy, although accuracy is also assessed. Many mini-bosses and all bosses also use time signatures, similar to Guitar Hero, where the player plays a series of notes tracked along a running time signature.

There is a two-player cooperative mode. Players can use two guitars, two drums, or one of each. This is competitive cooperative play in that each player has a separate score, and players can actually steal kills by completing untimed moves before the other player. If one player runs out of continues, the other player can donate unused continues to the dead.
