A complete remake of the 1986 classic Defender of the Crown (not to be confused with the 2002 Windows "Remastered" version). In Robin Hood: Defender of the Crown, the player takes on the role of the legendary outlaw in his quest to reclaim the throne of England after Richard the Lionheart was captured during the Crusades and his brother, John, usurped the throne and left him for dead in the Holy Land, drawing the ire of several knights. In a heated argument, he deemed them traitors, sparking a civil war.
Several gameplay features have been changed from the classic title, such as the player being Robin Hood himself (instead of choosing one of four suitors), fully 3D graphics, a storyline included with the game, and the goal being to be the first to reach and conquer King John's stronghold in Cornwall. To do this, the player must build an army large enough to contain enough counties, which generate money through taxes. This money can then be used to hire new troops (peasants, archers, foot soldiers, and powerful knights and catapults) or pay King Richard's ransom, which allows for the enlistment of loyalist knights.
