The day is August 15, 1951. As Tom Riley, New Jersey Firefighter and National Guardsman, you are tasked with saving New York City and the entire United States from the invasion of an alien force, the Chimeran, by rescuing your loved ones caught in the meantime. This is the first time that the Chimeras, horrible, obnoxious beings from another world, have invaded America; which places events in an intermediate time between Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. Enemies can be destroyed by gunfire (from a range of assorted weapons totaling up to eight weapons) and melee attacks; there are also different bullets, some are able to pierce walls for example.
In addition to the dual sticks and shoulder buttons, it is possible to use the front touchscreen (for melee, interact with the environment, lock Tom's aim on one of the enemies, use weapons at maximum of their possibilities during a secondary fire mode) and the rear touchpad (Tom will work if this is dabbed twice), thus using the distinct possibilities of the PS Vita's control system.
Resistance: Burning Skies is split into two unrelated game modes: single-player adventure and online multiplayer, the latter unrelated to the game's plot, relying on three game modes (deathmatch, team deathmatch, survival) that can take place over six maps. All weapons in the single-player campaign can be unlocked as the player levels up by succeeding in combat. Multiplayer is unlocked through a single-use online pass.
