In Rengoku, the player takes control of an android called ADAM (Autonomous Dueling Armed Machine) who, along with his fellow androids, was created by mankind for the purpose of war, but once peace is achieved, the androids are placed in a tower called Purgatory, using them to engage in a series of gladiator-like combat.
The ADAM the player takes control of develops an electronic soul and attempts to escape, the humans, realizing this, unleash the other androids in the tower on a mission to destroy it. The gameplay is primarily a shooter, mixed with a bit of RPG elements. There are multiple levels to complete, each becoming more difficult and with more androids to destroy, destroying them will make the android stronger and have the ability to upgrade their weaponry.
Starting with bare hands and eventually moving on to weapons, but unlike other games the weapons are mounted on the android itself with the ability to have weapons from its hands, arms, legs and even his forehead with the ability to use multiple weapons at once.
