Undead Nightmare tells the story of John Marston, who sees an epidemic ravage the American West, as well as Mexico, causing most inhabitants and animals to turn undead. This is a different scenario than Red Dead Redemption.

A disc also titled Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, which does not require ownership of the original Red Dead Redemption game, was released on November 22, 2010 in North America, and November 26, 2010 in Europe. The disc includes old downloadable content that was released before, namely Outlaws to the End, Legends and Killers, Liars and Cheats, as well as the classic multiplayer modes of Red Dead Redemption. This type of stand-alone can be compared to what Rockstar Games had already released with Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City.
