Rayman Arena/Rayman M is the first multiplayer game in the Rayman series. It's not a platformer like previous games from the Rayman franchises, but an arena racing and battle game. The game is divided into five leagues (beginner, advanced, expert, extreme and bonus). The top four each have three race tracks and three arenas that increase in difficulty.
Race mode is divided into four different race types:
Training: for exploring and practicing the racetrack and setting personal bests;
Race: up to four different characters compete over multiple laps, with the first to cross the finish line winning;
Popolopoï: you have to reach the finish line before the time runs out. Time can be replenished by shooting a kind of butterflies called Popolopoï and no opponent has to be beaten;
Lums: Over three rounds, a certain number of Lums must be collected and one must beat the other opponents to the finish line.
Arena battle mode is divided into three different battle types:
Lum Spring: The first to collect five Lums/crystals or whoever has the most when the timer runs out wins. Ice balls can be fired at an opponent to temporarily freeze them and beat them against the Lum;
Lum Fight: All players start with five hit points each which must be taken down with weapons found in the arena. A point is scored if a player shoots another player's last hit point. The first to reach a certain number of points or whoever has the most when the time runs out wins. When killed by his own actions, a negative point is scored;
Capture the Fly: The goal is to find and capture a Light-Fly. The fly follows you everywhere and gives you a point when a certain amount of time has passed. One loses control of the fly when hit by an opponent's ball. The first to reach a certain number of points or whoever has the most when the time runs out wins.
Playable characters include:
Rayman: The main protagonist of the series. A creature without arms, legs, and neck but with hands, feet, and a head that can move independently of its body;
Globox: a kind of frog and Rayman's best friend;
Teensies: a pair of odd midgets working together;
Tily: a cat-like fairy;
Admiral Razorbeard: the final boss of Rayman 2;
Henchman 800: one of the Robo-Pirates from Rayman 2;
Henchman 1000: another Robo-Pirate;
Razorwife: wife of Admiral Razorbeard.
To unlock rewards such as bonus levels, additional leagues, character skins and new characters, it is necessary to finish first in races and arenas.
