Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield (Poketto Monsutā Sōdo & Shīrudo?) are two role-playing video games in the Pokémon franchise developed by Game Freak under the direction of Junichi Masuda. They were officially announced on February 27, 2019 during a Pokémon Direct. The games were released globally on November 15, 2019 for the Nintendo Switch. An expansion pass is made available for games during 2020.
These two games of the eighth generation introduce, at their launch, 81 new Pokémon, among which new regional forms for Pokémon of old generations, called "forms of Galar". Eight new Pokémon are brought into the game through the Expansion Pass.
