Planet Coaster is a game about designing and managing a roller coaster theme park by the team that previously worked on several RollerCoaster Tycoon games, the Thrillville series, Kinect: Disneyland Adventures, and Zoo Tycoon. The player has access to a vast environment where the landscape can be sculpted to create a personalized park. It is possible to shape mountains, dig lakes and tunnels, or even create floating islands in the sky. Parks and environments can be designed in great detail around specific themes such as aliens, westerns, or a medieval setting.

Much of the game revolves around designing custom roller coaster rides based on a large number of components, including special effects, characters, and vehicles. Finally, there's the park itself, which involves attracting visitors and providing services, keeping them happy, and managing staff and finances to ensure the park's profitability. Guest response can be measured using speed and G-force to modify rides to make them more exciting or less challenging. Every building or service in the game can be custom-designed, including shops and ticket booths, for example. Players also have the option to share rides, scenery, and entire parks they've built with other players in the form of blueprints using the Steam Workshop system.
