PGA Tour 96 was the last in the series released for Sega's 16-bit console, and technologically the most advanced. Instead of offering several generic courses, the three available (Spyglass Hill, Sawgrass and River Highlands) are 3D, with visible height differences (as the console's limited 3D capabilities allow).
The player can either choose to play as one of 10 PGA Pros (whose swings have been digitized) or become a Pro - the game keeps track of stats (longest drive, driving accuracy, fastest lap, etc.), a game (Tournament, Strokeplay, Skins, Match and Shootout), as well as a replay.
On the gameplay side, PGA 96 uses the proven triple click system - one to start the swing, another to set the strength and a final one for accuracy. It is possible to fade or draw the ball (to curve the trajectory), add backspin, and toss or chip the ball (for some mid-range attempts at the hole or over a bush). The difficulty level mainly affects the leniency of the triple click. sweetspots - while in novices it's possible to leave accuracy a little off center, in pro levels the ball goes where your swing took it - no excuses taken. However, it is only in Pro that it is possible to make the longest drives, as the amateur and novice levels take up a few meters of the total club capacity.
