Catz on PlayStation 2 is a single-player action game and not the virtual pet game one would expect based on the plethora of games in this genre that share the same name.
The story behind the game goes as follows:
Once upon a time there was a young cat, the player, who lived on a magical island. They lived with Arvin and Ione in a nice little house. Arvin was an important cat because he had a magic hat that he used to keep the peace, bring order over chaos, and protect everyone in general.
Now it turns out there was an evil wolf, Ivlet, who did a lot of really bad things. He got caught and was locked up in the local prison on the Magic Island. The young cat and his friend Victor snuck out to see Ivlet in the night and he tricked them into showing him the magic hat which he caught in his big strong jaws and put it on his head. Using the powers of the Magic Hat, he destroyed houses, turned wild beasts against cats, broke bridges, and did all kinds of damage.
The young cat was now in a lot of trouble and was thrown in jail but was released so he could help the cats on the island who had suffered because of his stupidity. Now, the Magic Hat was no ordinary hat, besides being magical, it had a mind of its own. Along the way the young cat meets Beat who was the good half of the spirit of Magic Cats who gave him lots of advice, a magic encyclopedia and other information.
