NHL Rivals 2004 is the first NHL title for Xbox, developed by MGS (Microsoft Game Studios), and the second title developed under the XSN Sports banner - the development team's first foray into console hockey.
At the time of release, this game's visuals were its main selling point, with each player's face mapped to their in-game model. The game features a fully animated polygonal crowd, tons of motion-captured animations, NHL licensed players, teams and arenas. The look and feel of the game is very different from games like EA's NHL series.
It was also the first hockey game on Xbox that allowed players to play in online tournaments and leagues on Xbox Live and XSN Sports. The rosters were updated throughout the season via content downloads on Xbox Live, but were only available for a limited time.
