NHL Hitz Pro is Midway's 2003/2004 entry into the licensed hockey market. For the 2004 sports season, Midway introduced a guideline to move its sports titles away from overdone arcade-style gameplay and introduce a more sports-like approach. For NHL Hitz Pro, this meant switching from 3-on-3 hockey to 5-on-5 hockey to make the game more authentic for the demands of the hockey player sim. Although NHL Hitz Pro still retains many of the arcade-style elements that were a hallmark of the Hitz series, such as board checks and through-glass kicks, gameplay has been tuned to deliver an experience true to the sport of hockey. . That being said, the player has plenty of options to tune the gameplay either for a fast arcade experience or a slower, more simulation-like style of play.
