Need for Speed: Underground (abbreviated as NFSU) is a racing video game developed by EA Black Box and published by Electronic Arts in 2003. It is part of the Need for Speed series.
The game's vibe (staggered tuned cars participating in illegal street racing) was greatly inspired by import scene culture and the Fast and Furious and 2 Fast 2 Furious movies.
NFSU is a completely redesigned installment in the Need for Speed series that offers a career mode (the underground) with a story, and a garage mode that allows players to fully customize their cars in terms of performance and visuals with a large number of brands. All races take place in a city at night. The term 'Underground' in the title refers to 'tuned' cars and the import scene rather than the underground economy. All of this, added to the arcade style gameplay, have become contentious points for Need for Speed fans. However, this title was a huge commercial success and inspired a sequel.
