NAtURAL DOCTRINE is a turn-based tactical role-playing game set in a fantasy world where humans fight other races. The player controls the guard soldier Geoff who works out of the fortified city Feste. Initially, he goes after a number of goblins to gather resources, which is the start of a great story. The player ends up assembling a party of up to ten different characters with classes such as Versatile Warrior, Apprentice, Combat Medic, Sword Specialist, Sword Master, and more. Characters carry gear and equipment found through loot and gain experience in battles to upgrade and upgrade agility, dexterity, faith, health, intelligence, spirit, strength and vitality. Each class has its own skill tree with different paths unlocked by spending skill points. It is possible to reallocate spent skill points at any time to try a different build or strategy. If only one character dies, the scenario must be replayed.

From a top-down world map, different locations or scenarios are available. During battles, characters are presented top-down or third-person. Like a turn-based game, movement is based on grids. Characters have various offensive and defensive actions available depending on their class with melee, guard, tidy attacks and spells, but their stance is also important. Depending on a character's position in one grid relative to another, specific actions become available or characters become able to act out of turn, which is called binding in the overall "initiative" system. . Obstacles in the environment also play a role and players should consider linking effects as friendly fire is possible and attempting to block an enemy attack based on position may have a negative result if the character being shielded suddenly attacks. As multiple attacks and actions can be planned in a single turn, brightly colored lines indicate action and direction to prevent friendly fire and unwanted linking effects.
