Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero is a story-driven fighting game that puts you in the shoes of Sub-Zero and chronicles a series of events that happened before Mortal Kombat 1.

In a storyline reminiscent of Looking Glass's Thief, Lin Kuei's assassin/thief is sent to steal an important document; this mission turns out to be a test of a mysterious character (who turns out to be Quan Chi from MK4) and who tasks you when retrieving this item to recover an ancient medallion of unspeakable power. However, once you retrieve the locket, Quan Chi reveals that he actually tricked you, and the locket is the key to awakening the demonic Shinnok (yup, the same villain from MK4). You must now become a reluctant hero, as you chase Quan Chi through Hell itself hoping you get to Shinnok before him.

Gameplay-wise, the game takes the familiar 2D combat environment of Mortal Kombat and turns it into a hybrid fighting/platforming game, where you must travel through dangerous levels by running and jumping while fighting a path against scanned and polygonal enemies. Sub-Zero's interface is the same as in all MK games, with the addition of "use" and "turn around" buttons and additions such as an inventory, and a slight RPG touch in which you get experience. to defeat opponents, resulting in new techniques and moves to perform in the game.

Technically speaking, this game represents the latest stage in the evolution of the MK series 2D engines. New features include zoom, 3D lighting as well as 3D backgrounds and characters etc.
