Monster ranching and creature contests go 128-bit as the popular Tecmo series comes to the PlayStation 2 in this version of Monster Rancher 3. Although many characters and locations are recognizable from previous versions of series, the monsters in this game are depicted in a cel-shaded cartoon style, similar to Dreamcast's Jet Grind Radio or the contemporary PS2 version Yanya Caballista starring Gawoo.
The game receives improved graphics and some additional features with its move to the more powerful PS2 console. Most of the rules of the game and monster farming conventions established in previous games remain in this version. Monsters grow based on the training and treatment they receive, and players are encouraged to explore the game world to find new training opportunities. Players can spawn monsters using other forms of media, as the game spawns creatures based on data on music CDs and movie DVDs. Although some aspects of the creation are random, some albums and movies may generate creatures specifically related to the artistic content of the disc.
