The adaptation of the classic board game Monopoly for PlayStation supports up to four players. Players can choose from eight tokens known from the board game. All non-human players can be controlled by the AI - ten different AI opponent profiles can be selected.
The game supports a variety of custom rules. These include popular house rules such as collecting fines on free parking, double bonuses on GO, and having to walk around the board once before you start buying. Standard rules such as bidding, equal build rule, or trading from jail can be disabled. It is also possible to set the number of bank buildings to infinity. Various rules that vary between regional editions of the board game may also be changed, including a higher luxury tax or the ability to pay 10% income tax instead of a flat fee.
During a game, the board is seen in perspective, with the side where the current token is always in front. Controls are point and click with the cursor (PlayStation mouse is supported). Clicking on Mr. Monopoly causes him to roll the dice on the board, while transactions and trades are done from a special sub-menu. When a token moves, the game plays a corresponding pre-rendered animation. Each space on the board also has a special animation played when the player reaches it. For the properties, these change from an abandoned landscape for the unowned properties to scenes with inhabited houses and hotels for the built properties. Both types of animations can be disabled before a match.
