This baseball game is an update of MLB 2000. The game contains representations of real teams, stadiums, stats and players that mirror their real counterparts. This game features Exhibition, All-Star Game, Season, Playoffs, Spring Training, and Home Run Derby modes. There is also a Franchise mode which allows the player to create a team from scratch and try to turn it into a World Series caliber team. Another feature of the game is the Manager Mode which allows the player to view scouting reports during the game, warm up the bullpen in the bullpen and try to take their team to the World Series and hopefully the, to win them.
A unique feature of this game is the Total Control Fielding and Total Control Batting systems. The hitting system affects the player's control over how the ball is hit, the direction it is hit, and the power of the hitter. The fielding system allows the player to have more control over the fielders. There is also an Advanced Batting Cursor option where guessing the pitcher's throw correctly allows the player to lock onto the pitch for more power while guessing incorrectly will cause the batting cursor to narrow and make the ball harder to hit.
The artificial intelligence used in the game was developed in consultation with Tony Gwynn, Trevor Hoffman and Davey Johnson. Vin Scully and Dave Campbell are on hand to provide commentary during the game.
