Metal Gear Solid (Metaru Gia Soriddo?), commonly abbreviated as MGS, is an action-stealth video game created, produced and directed by Konami employee Hideo Kojima, released in 1998 for the PlayStation.
The third installment in the Metal Gear series, the game follows Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990) and precedes Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001). It is nevertheless the fourth installment of the Metal Gear franchise, Snake's Revenge (1990) having followed Metal Gear (1987) but not having been developed and recognized by Hideo Kojima.
