You are the genetically modified Clan Mechwarrior. Clans invade the inner sphere. Join the Wolf Clan or the Jade Hawk Clan as they pursue their own agenda against the Inner Sphere and other Clans. Lead your advanced Omnimechs into battle against all comers. Earn high warrior ratings (using fewer mechs or smaller mechs than necessary, completing secondary objectives, etc.) and you'll have a chance to enter a promotion trial where you'll face higher odds in an arena . If you win, you rank up. If you do very well, you can go all the way to Khan, leader of the clan.
Mechwarrior II was developed in-house by Activision as a successor to their original Mechwarrior. Although this time there is no dynamic campaign and mercenary actions, the clan culture is integrated in both campaigns. Different clans have different mechs and different rules, even different weapons. You can customize your mechs to use less than "par" strength in order to get a higher rating. The game features full 3D environments. The addition of NetMech allowed users to fight online.
When 3D maps arrived, special versions of the game were created to take advantage of 3D texturing.
