Martian Panic is a rail-shooter for 1 to 4 players where your objective is to stop a Martian invasion. The game takes place in a retro American universe of the 50s, rendered in a comic book style.
The story takes place on 8 levels such as a classic restaurant, a drive-in cinema or the great pyramids of Giza. Completing one level will unlock the next, with all unlocked levels directly available from the selection screen. There are 3 skill levels to choose from: Cadet, Ranger, and Ace.
As with most rail shooters, players have no control over their character's movements and can only move their weapon crosshairs to incapacitate enemies before they can shoot them. This is done by pointing the Wii Remote at the screen and pressing the B Button to fire or collect power-ups. Weapon switching is done by pressing the A Button, while reloading is done by aiming down off-screen and pressing the B Button. Each player will need a Wii Remote.
Players can choose between 6 characters to represent them in the game: Jeb the farmer, Bobby the boy, Judy the housewife, Chuck the jazz player, Mr Peterson the salesman and Marsha Ann the cheerleader. Characters will sometimes appear on screen to react to current events.
6 weapons can be collected throughout the game: pistol (basic but with infinite ammo supply), scattergun, laser blaster, flash gun, grenade launcher and experimental laser.
As you play the game, you can unlock rewards and content for the gallery which contains concept art, 3D models, and cut scenes from the game.
