Mario Golf on Game Boy Color isn't just a port of the N64 game - it's a totally different game in its own right. It is a combination of a golf game and an RPG. Like in an RPG, you choose your character at the start, with different strengths and weaknesses, and throughout the game your character gains experience points by winning matches or playing minigames. Experience points can be distributed to various skills, such as putting, making it easier for you to do well. There are many skills and no character you can create will play exactly the same.

Although story mode is the main part of the game, there are plenty of other modes to keep you busy, like tournament, match, stunt, practice, and two-player mode via link cable. It comes with a dictionary of all the golf terms you'll ever need and a huge range of statistics about your player.
