Makai Kingdom is the fourth tactical RPG developed by Nippon Ichi on PlayStation 2 and it closely follows in the footsteps of previous games in the same style, which are Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, La Pucelle: Tactics and Phantom Brave.
Lord Zetta, King of the Netherworld, tried to rewrite earth's history but failed, and in the process brought death upon himself. Three evil lords appeared before Zetta and promised to aid her in her quest to regain control of the land once again. The player takes control of Zetta and her army to return the Netherworld to its rightful owner.
The game mechanics consists of several stages where the player needs to defeat the enemy or complete other tasks to advance to the next level. The battles are turn-based, which means that once the player has moved and attacked, it's the enemy's turn to move their troops one by one. When the battle is won, the next level becomes selectable. Between fights, you can improve your team of fighters by buying better weapons, recruiting more soldiers, etc.
