The first entry in the long-running Madden football series on Game Boy Color is also the series' first entry on a handheld in three years. Since the console and computer versions have migrated to 3D graphics, the GBC edition uses traditional sprite-based 2D with a top-down view of the playing field.
Game modes include Exhibition Matches, Sudden Death Matches (first team to earn wins), Full Seasons, and Playoffs. Progress can be saved through the use of passwords. Game features include many features known from other iterations of the series, such as player injuries and substitutions, audibles, detailed stats, weather and game time control, and more. The playbook includes not only a large number of standard games, but also a variety of trick games like fake field goals and reverse games.
