Linux or GNU/Linux is a family of Unix-like open source operating systems based on the Linux kernel, created in 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Many Linux distributions have since emerged and are an important vehicle for popularizing the free software movement.
Although Linux was originally developed for PC-compatible computers, it has only ever been used on a very small part of personal computers. The operating system for Android mobile phones, which uses the Linux kernel but not GNU, now equips 85% of touchscreen tablets and smartphones.
