The plot of Kirby's Epic Yarn largely revolves around Nintendo's cute cream puff dragged from his normal world by an evil wizard named Yin-Yarn and trapped in a cloth-based world called Patch Land. Everything in this new land, including the heroic Marshmallow Kirby, is made of yarn and fabric. As a result, Kirby lost his power inhalation and power absorption abilities. After meeting and rescuing Fluff, a prince, Kirby and his companion decide to work together to "assemble" Patch Land following the destruction caused by Yin-Yarn.

Kirby's Epic Yarn follows previous Nintendo Paper Mario and Yoshi's Story franchises in its creative design around real-world physical aesthetics. Where Mario was designed around a flat paper theme and Yoshi lived through a living storybook (in a sense, a variation on a paper theme), Kirby ventures into strange new territory. made of fabric and yarn. Stages and puzzles are heavily designed around fabric themes and aesthetics, such as enemies made from yarn and puzzle elements involving zippers and buttons.

As mentioned, Kirby has lost his typical powers, and instead of using his formidable lungs as a weapon, he uses a (obviously) wire whip. While Kirby no longer swallows enemies to steal their powers, he hasn't slowed down in the slightest when it comes to transformation and unique powers. Kirby floats by transforming into a parachute, flies into a UFO, drives himself in a car and features a wide range of other transformations including an anvil, dolphin, mole, dune buggy, rocket, robot, notes of music and Suite.
