King Salmon: The Big Catch is a fishing competition simulator: a player must spend a day fishing for king salmon. Simulated activities include driving a boat to choose the best spot to fish, choosing lures, line lengths, fishing depths, driving a boat to fish for salmon, and finally removing the caught fish. The objective is to defeat certain fictional fishermen, played by computer, according to the fish caught.

The game also includes simple role-playing elements, as the player's skills improve with time and experience and it is possible to successfully catch bigger and better fish.
