In Hexyz Force, players choose one of two main characters: either the young priestess Cecilia "Ceci" Armaclite or the veteran knight Levant von Schweitzer. The two paths tell different parts of the story, making the game essentially two RPGs in one. Combat begins on the field map, but just like other Atlus PSP titles, battles can be avoided by dodging enemies on the field.
Once combat is engaged, the game transforms into a standard turn-based RPG, but with a rock-paper-scissors elemental system called divine aspects. Each weapon is tied to an element, and if attacks follow the correct pattern, a damage gauge will build up that multiplies the damage once the chain is broken.
