Gerdy, an apprentice shepherd, embarks on a quest to save his father from an evil spell. His journey takes him through an island of diverse territories, populated by an assortment of wild creatures, each of which is part of a complex, interdependent food web. To avenge his father's nemesis and restore the goodness of the island, Gerdy must hone his skills as a shepherd and eventually compete in a tournament to become a master shepherd.
Herdy Gerdy is primarily a platform game with strategy and puzzle elements. The levels involve Gerdy traversing dangerous areas with timed jumps, avoiding or destroying obstacles. However, a significant part of the gameplay is devoted to collecting various animals, leading them on a safe path, similar to Lemmings. Each of the animals has its own behavior and skills (eg swimming), requiring the player to use different tactics to capture them.
