Grey's Anatomy: The Video Game is based on the Grey's Anatomy TV series and built much like the series itself. The story of an infectious virus that plagues Seattle Grace Hospital is divided into five episodes, the episodes are divided into acts, and the acts are divided into scenes. Each scene focuses on a character and ends with a mini-game.
There are basically two types of scenes. During conversations, the player must sometimes choose between two choices of interaction between the characters. Then a mini-game follows, e.g. rip a photograph, sliding puzzle, rhythm sequence or tile matching puzzle. Operations and treatments are also sequential mini-games, e.g. disinfect by dragging the cursor on the screen, then cut the skin by making a straight line and sew it by connecting dots.
The player has five tries per mini-game, if he fails more often he must start the stage again. Due to technical platform limitations, there are no voice acting or animated cutscenes on the DS.
